I am writing this  5 years after this video was made …Da Vinci has created a quill sable brish, called Artissimo .  I have a couple and I love them. They have the sable hair but the quill and wire wrapping. This is the only manufacturer that I know of that uses  sable hair in the quill format.

The paper looks like it reacts weirdly, like it's slightly water resistant!

OH I learned something new! I didn't know they were different. I just thought, huh this is tied differently.
I was watching a documentary on medieval castle making, where they also made some brushes the old fashioned way, the quills they used were from large goose feathers as the ferrule.

I was just shopping around for water brushes and you answered some questions I had, so Thanks again for an informative and unbiased video. Very happy subscriber here.

Thx so much, such a clear video, usually i have to watch a couple of videos to get all the information, but you are so thorough in sharing all the details, thx so much!!

Teoh you never cease to amaze me. Many of my choices for purchases have been based on your GREAT demo's and advice!!! (I don't watch the tech stuff, just the real hands on painting stuff and LOVE that!! ) yay!

I'm a big fan of the DaVinci Casaneo (serie 498) quill. I have number 0 and is my most loved and most used brush by far.
I also have a couple DaVinci Petit Gris (series 418) Raphael's (series 803) and a Rosemary collapsible quill. But I tend to reach for the Casaneo most of the time.
I love quill brushes. They hold tons of water and paint. Also great for soaking excess water from the paper.
Thanks for your videos Teoh, always useful!!

I only began learning watercolour this year, and I always wondered what the difference between a quill and a mop is. Thanks for enlightening me adds quill to shopping list

I would slightly disagree on the "point doesn't matter that much". Really depends on what, where, and how you're painting. Joseph Zbukvic used those Escoda Aquarios in some of his DVDs and mentioned that points are important for cutting around some shapes. I guess, it's much easier to paint a large area with the ability to carefully cut the smaller edges without changing the brush. Probably matters more for plein air than studio, but I also find it beneficial to change brushes less and be able to achieve precision even with a large wash brush. Escoda Travel Ultimo is much more pointy than the regular one for some reason.

It was really nice to watch this calming review after I ended work! A stress reliever and as always, a very detailed review!!

Thank you for your videos and recommendations. Your videos and blog are inspirational. Have a great day.

Good stuff as usual, Teoh. For me, both quill and mop are big-bellied round brushes, but a quill comes to a fine point at the tip. Both can swab on the washes but only a quill can scribe a thin line. And a quill should have a wired ferrule.

Thank you Teoh for your attention to detail in these review videos. I always find the information very useful, and I appreciate your effort.

I always learn so much with you! 🥰

I wish I had gotten the  casaneo during Jackson's brush sale now, lol

Very informative vlog, thank you for discussing detailed information and comparison demo

Coool!!! Idk why but sometimes in my brain im like im gonna watch uncle’s watercolour channel lol

I have an Isabey collapsible travel brush. I think it’s the smallest type of quill... so good for small size paper, or finer work. Rosemary is a great brush company also...

As usual, great, detailed information. Thank you.

excellent review. thank you.
