Don't think I'd have the heart to rasp over that checkering, pretty rare nowdays for a reasonably priced factory rifle to come with real cut checkering.

Once again I am impressed.  It takes either a great deal of skill and confidence in your skill, both of which Mr. Potterfield obviously has, or a great deal of stupidity to take a rasp to a stock that is that pretty to start with.  So for all of us mere mortals out here who might like to try that, it would be good advice to practice on a few ugly old birch stocks before starting to file on a beautiful fully figured walnut stock, and you might want to learn to both finish & checker the stock first too!  :)

I'll be using some of these techniques shaping a replacement foregrip for an 1862 muzzleloader that had been sporterize way way back.

This was the exact information I needed. I need to reshape my boyds at-one 10/22 stock, that I cut and modified to accept a 10/22 takedown receiver. I am wanting to use a Midwest Industries 10/22 takedown handgaurd, but the M.I. handgaurd has a slimmer profile on both bottom and sides. This means I need to reshape the wood laminate part to match the M.I. handgaurd. The process you used to reshape the forend looks like the same or similar technique I need to use for reshaping the wood laminate where the M.I. handgaurd butts up against.
