Learn how to pose clients for studio birthday photoshoots in this full behind-the-scenes photography session. I take you through my real process for directing a client, creating flattering poses, making small adjustments, working from inspiration photos, and building posing variety throughout an entire studio photoshoot.

One of the biggest challenges photographers face is knowing how to pose clients who aren't professional models. You'll see how I demonstrate poses myself, position the hands, shoulders, hips and legs, adjust angles, and communicate throughout the shoot to help my client feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

I also break down my first five-minute rule. Early in the photoshoot, I show my client some of the first images so I can understand what she likes about her skin tone, angles, poses and overall look. This gives us direction for the rest of the session instead of waiting until the end to find out what the client likes.

For lighting, I kept this studio setup extremely simple. Instead of using my normal umbrella or large softbox, I bounced a Godox AD400 Pro directly off my white ceiling to create soft, even light across my subject. I show you the RAW and JPEG results so you can see exactly what this simple bounce-flash setup produced straight out of camera.
