The Entire Story of the Trans-Allegheny Asylum — Built for 250, It Held 2,400

#transallegheny #westonstatehospital #asylumhistory

It was designed to hold 250 patients. By the 1950s it held 2,400. Construction started in 1858, survived a Civil War gold robbery, and wasn't finished until 1881. This is the entire story of the largest hand-cut sandstone building in the Western Hemisphere.

In this video, we trace Weston State Hospital from Thomas Kirkbride's original design through a century of overcrowding, through Walter Freeman's 1952 "Operation Ice Pick" lobotomy campaign — and its direct, documented link to Lakin, the segregated hospital founded with 162 patients transferred out of Weston itself — through two Charleston Gazette exposés three decades apart, the 1994 closure, thirteen years of total abandonment, and the 2007 courthouse auction that sold the entire building for $1.5 million. We correct the marketing claim that it's the largest hand-cut stone building "after the Kremlin," and we visit the three unmarked cemeteries the ghost tours don't take you to.

The building now hosts an Easter egg hunt every spring, on the lawn where patients once took their only supervised steps outside.
