Everyone says Cebu is the "softer landing" in the Philippines: calmer, cheaper, and easier than Manila. So we gave ourselves 48 hours to put it to the test. We look at rent prices, safety, healthcare, the expat community, and what daily life actually feels like, then give our honest verdict on whether Cebu beats Manila for expats and retirees. 🇵🇭

The short answer is that Cebu isn't automatically cheaper. Rent ranges from about ₱20K for a studio to ₱150K for a premium 2-bedroom, which is more than Manila's high end. But its hospitals, airport, and tight-knit expat community give it a real edge for the right person.

I can’t speak about Cebu directly because I have never left Luzon, but I can’t imagine spending the rest of my life in Manila. My wife and I lived there briefly because we got an awesome deal on an apartment, but after a month I couldn’t handle it anymore. That city is absolutely chaos. We moved into an apartment by the beach 8 hours away in Pangasinan while our house is being built on a nearby island and we couldn’t be happier. I have lived in major cities my whole life and now that we are in the province, I finally understand what peace and tranquility truly is.

Be sure to look at a flood map. It's similar to moving to Houston where it's only worth living where it doesn't get flooded. Gamay Lisa, a local vlogger, got flooded. Thanks for the video!

Been living in Manila most of my life, and visited Cebu a couple of times. It really does depend on your preference. Although I am very used to Manila, the congestion, the traffic and the floods during rainy season really takes its toll on anyone. It’s a daily struggle just to go to work then. It’s kinda like living in other major US cities when you have been a New Yorker 😅. If your heart belonged to the hustle and bustle of Manila, it’s something you will always miss despite of the negatives. But if you were used to a more calm life (living in the provinces, or quieter cities from any country your are from), the headache of Manila is not for you ☺️

Cebu City land area is only 317 sqkm (Singapore is 700+ sqkm) . 90% of the topography is hilly and mountainous, only 10% (30sqkm) is flat …

Born in Cebu but jet around Manila, Cebu and Bohol. Cebu is easier to travel from coast to coast and inter islands. Manila seems like we never left the comfort of our home in USA. Bohol love the farm life there.

I like Cebu, and I enjoy flying internationally in/out of Cebu, but if I wanted to live in a reasonably large city with amenities and reasonably good healthcare I would choose Bacolod.
But I live in a medium size provincial city, San Carlos Negros Occidental, which is convenient to either of those cities. Partly a family decision, but I do love the place!
I realize emergency services will be unreliable, but honestly, one traffic jam means the same thing in Manila or Cebu.

If you have real money, it's always better to live in the province.
Cebu's the perfect balance. The city's gonna pop within 2 decades, but the real selling point is the Southern part of the island

I think you’re missing the point, my man. Cebu is for people who actually enjoy living here, like myself - it’s definitely not for everyone.
For me, the priority is having a big city with all the amenities close by, while still being just minutes from beautiful white-sand beaches. That combination is surprisingly hard to find anywhere in the Philippines. At the same time, I absolutely hate being stuck in traffic and dealing with heavy pollution, so Cebu gives me the balance I’m looking for.

I have been to Manila only for a few days at a time. But there is no way I would live in Manila. I definitely prefer

Asia since 2008. Trialled Cebu for a month in July to see if i was overlooking the Ph as a destination to spend more time in. Wanted to leave by the end of the first week, stayed for a month to see if it was just an adjustment challenge. Subjectively Ph is a poor mans choice for geo arbitrage play. You lose the convenience of Th, the order and clean environment of JPN/KOR, for a less safe, more polluted and poorer choice of everyday items, that make quality of living more comfortable. Hard pass for me. Sadly i hadn't seen poverty like that since i last visited India ~early 2000's.

Neither!!!!! USA or Serbia for me. Duel citizen of the Philippines through my mother and Serbian through my father. Belagrade the Balkans, Poland, Croatia. All good to Filipino people. Really nice to see other Filipinos in Serbia too!!!!!!! Philippines is only good for visiting for a few months but my god our government is complete shit to us the citizens.
