We're Clover and Loop, two former Americans who moved to Toronto and keep getting Canada wrong. This is the next chapter in our series: 15 more things we were completely confident about and completely wrong about. We get into culture, money, safety, wildlife, the underground city most people walk right past, and the one thing at number one we genuinely couldn't joke about.

🇨🇦 Ontario Canada, I was run off the road onto the side by a transport truck. I pulled into the next service stop to get a coffee. The guy in line behind me told me that he was the truck driver, apologized and paid for my coffee.

In Canada, we say sorry so often that there is a law saying we do not legally admit guilt in a court in Canada by saying sorry

One Canada TV show you should track down is "Corner Gas". It is so funny and gave this Maritimer a taste of Saskatchewan. And speaking of libraries, in New Brunswick ours also lend out sports equipment like skate boards and skates.

In Canada you can be sick even if you don't work That is a big difference . And I have never paid for anything accept my taxes. I live in PEI and I am 73

The PATH: I had a co-worker who lived and worked on the PATH. He used to show up at work in shorts and bunny slippers on super cold days just to flex that he didn't ever need to go outside.

77yr old dude here in your town, Toronto. First of all, I'm happy to tell you that your pronunciation of "Tronna" is spot on! Well done, guys!
I have known about all the other items forever, so it's no contest. On a personal note, I had a hip replacement in 2023 and another in 2024. With both surgeries I awoke got off the operating table and walked over to my surgeon to give him the biggest bear hug of his life! Then I walked into the Recovery Room, got dressed and walked down to the lobby where my ride was waiting for me. There was no mention of payments or money at all. The surgery team just wished me well. The hospital has my insurance info so it's all completed with no input from me.
Happy to hear you're enjoying your new life in Toronto. You can tour the world without leaving town.❤

Using °f for kitchen appliances is not because they are made in the U.S.. It is because we have generational recipes we love and that has kept oven temps in the imperial measurement of Fahrenheit.

One of the most consistent things I've seen in videos of people from the USA moving to Canada or even extended vacations is the ability to relax and how surprised they were about how much tension and anxiety they were feeling all the time back home.

I think one of the most fundamental differences between the US and Canadian healthcare systems is the concept of approving claims. This is not a thing, at all, in Canada. I go to the doctor, the doctor decides the BEST treatment, I get said treatment (with no bill as it is covered by our taxes). I find it very disturbing that in the US a private company stands between a patient and their doctor. Even if in most cases things get approved it is still shocking that it happens at all. Canada's health care system may not appeal to the US and that's totally fine. Our single payer model (which we really like!) isn't the only option for universal health care. Perhaps the German or Japanese systems might align better as they have multi-payer public/private systems that provide universal healthcare. There are lots of options. Please, USA, pick something, anything, that will provide it.

Did anyone watch Amazing Race Canada last night? Genuine Canadian experience as the team in last place gave up their dream and helped another team to succeed. They knew it meant they would lose and did it anyway. So heartwarming without being sappy.
