Today was the day to film the story of Jaguaribe, one of the oldest and most traditional neighborhoods in João Pessoa, but the reality we encountered surprised us.
In the 2nd episode of our documentary series about the neighborhoods of João Pessoa, we explored the streets, culture, and past of Jaguaribe. What should have been a journey through the golden age of the Paraíba capital turned into a shock of reality. We found Simeão Leal Square, historic mansions, and old hospitals completely abandoned.
But the most tense moment happened behind the scenes: during our filming, we were warned by an off-duty police officer not to approach the neighborhood's famous balustrade. The reason? Surveillance cameras used by organized crime and a high-risk area after recent conflicts in the region.
So, what happened to the cultural cradle of João Pessoa? Is it safe to walk through Jaguaribe today? How do residents cope with this contrast between the glorious past and the current abandonment? Come and see the raw truth through our lenses.
