21,000 mile service interval is insane. That has to be planned obsolescence.

I thought I was on D4A for a moment

JLR really is interesting to talk about, because they really had/have some of the best cars in their category (best driving, most comfortable, best looking, etc.) but with unforgivable mistakes (unreliable, terrible customer service, inconsistent models). It's a shame that such good qualities and lovely cars got ruined like that

Had a chuckle the other day when you talked about “in my other bmw video I did a 5 years back.” Can’t believe the channel has been around that long. Have gotten so many years of automotive know how from the best in the youtube business. Im sure Im not alone in thinking that. You keep making videos for another 5 years; I will be there watching them …and commenting!

Meeting emissions standards while compromising the overall reliability. The modern days Greenwashing.

I worked 5 years (until 2021) in a JLR workshop. All ingeniums 2l diesel are trash. Most of them got either turbo problems or singing balance shafts (bearings destroyed). However, in my time I haven't seen a problem on the 2l petrol nor the 3l petrol. There was also few problems on the 3 cyl. petrol engine because people where using the engine too little (hybrid) and only full load.

Guy at work was bragging about getting his new secondhand discovery, 2.0 ingenious engine!! We told him don’t!!! Wouldn’t listen said it was all made up to rubbish JLR. 8 months later DPF failed, 700 quid repair bill, tried to claim it back from an extended warranty he took out, DPF not covered. Just after Christmas, rattling from cold, told him that’s the timing chains, na it’s just the cold weather, February, car in for diagnostic, chains need replacing, extended warranty? Not covered, normal wear and tear!!! Now he’s got a 2 grand bill for the repair.  Got real arsey when we said ‘told you so’ took it to trade it, 5 dealers said no thanks!!!! Stuck with it now, 30k car that’s worth 5k??? Bags of shit!

A friend of mine bought one of these time bombs!  She has no idea about the engine or its oil service history.  When I asked her how many previous owners it has had, to my horror, she said seven.  And the Discovery has only done 60K miles.

You make great videos. No massive amounts of AI slop needed, just brains and creativity, as it should be. Subbed!

Many manufacturers are having problems with engine reliability / durability.
I there are two main reasons - emissions and the finance department.
The whole industry decided that extended durability testing was too expensive and takes too long. So now it goes from the drawing board, to the dynamometer and then directly to production. Let the customer find the weakness.

Jaguar going full EV, may not have been a bad move after all. 😅

As somebody who worked in JLR for 20 years from X-type, Freelander 2 and Evoque, can I recommend their cars? No not at all. They call them offroaders because they do actually spend most of their time off the road...undriveable problems. I have a series 1 Discovery 3 so I can attest to my claim, mines been idle for 2 years now.

In Russia quite a lot of 2019-2022 new Defenders were sold with 2.0 Ingenium Diesels, and they're notorious for failing, some say none exist that had driven past 60k miles without catastrophic failure.

I had a Discovery Sport 2.0 diesel Ingenium; first car I ever bought brand new.  Every oil change (at 5000 miles) had an extra 2 litres of diesel in the oil sump!! It also had many electrical failings too!  Sold it as soon as the warranty ended. I’ll never buy another JLR product.

The issue is not with the engine family. The issue is confined to early, up to 2021 build four cylinder diesel engines particularly and that combined with the pre-facelift model mainly transverse installations that had remote mounted DPF’s. Post facelift models had new bulkheads to the body allowing close coupled DPF.
21,000 miles is NOT the engine oil service interval. That is for scheduled body services. The engine has a separate, second ‘intelligent’ service countdown counter that usually flags up a due oil change at about 15,000 miles on average, if not sooner. I would and do change the oil change every 7000 to 10,000 miles or one year, maximum, regardless of the intelligent oil condition monitor.
I’m not sure how they gave upgraded the balancer shaft bearings but there is no balancer shaft pair on six cylinder engines as they are naturally balanced and only require a standard torsional balance which is a simple part of the pulley at the front of the engine. These have been fitted to six cylinder engines since time immemorial and do need to be replaced by new ones and I suggest at between every 120,000 and 150,000 miles.
To summarise, the pre-2021 four cylinder diesel engines were and are a disaster.  Post 2021 are very much improved and six cylinder engines are excellent. Not many reached 200,000 miles yet of course, because not many drive about 50,000 miles a year and they haven’t been fitted for all that many years yet. I wouldn’t touch a pre-2021 four cylinder diesel but would consider a newer one [these will probably have the Pivi pro screen on the dashboard] as long as there was evidence that the owner had changed to oil at no longer than every 10,000 miles.

"Landfill Rover"

Thank you for the informative view of this engine, in particular for a video that isn't wholly negative but neutral in its stance. It's so rare to see car videos where the author isn't blindly hating whatever car brands are fashionable to hate at the moment.

Lets be clear about something here.....Its true that before the JLR Ingenium PETROL engines, they were Ford derived engines, BUT as far as DIESELS go, then before the Ingenium 2.0l diesel, JLR used the brilliant 2.2L diesel engines from PSA Peugeot.....So these were Peugeot Engines, NOT Ford.  The PSA Engines code name is the DW12, and this is what i have in my 2012 Range Rover Evoque.
These legendary diesel engines were also used in many top line Peugeots and Citroens, just to name a few.
I still have my 2012 RR Evoque SD4 to this day (14 Years ownership since new) , and i'm proud to say it's been a totally reliable experience, plus i've also never had any DPF related issues or changes ever in all my 207000 kms of city driving.
As far as Diesels go, Peugeot and Mercedes have always (from at least since the 70's) made  the best diesel engines.....take Africa's harsh conditions for example, it has always been these two manufacturers..... high mileage 504's, e-class etc etc, have always been everywhere, including in taxi's all over the world.
I love my DW12 Peugeot Engine in my 1st Gen Evoque (Dynamic Version), and along with the incredibly timeless, concept-like car design....its the main reason i have kept it.

My wife and I had an X-Type Jaguar some 15 yrs ago. Bought it when it was 4 yrs old with 25000 documented miles on the clock. We had it for 5 yrs - mainly because my wife bought it with some compensation money she had been awarded and she loved it at first sight and drove it far more than I ever did.
I found it rather cramped to enter and exit with little leg room in the rear seats. It was thirsty ( 2.5 litre V6 AWD version ) going 22mpg most of the time and as little as 14 mpg in heavy traffic, and was always going wrong in some way. Every year at its MoT test, it was a £500 bill. The tyres were low-profile and forever getting punctures. It lost 80% of its value in the five years we owned it. What a money pit ! Admittedly it wasn’t really a Jaguar in the traditional sense - it was just a Ford Mondeo in a posh frock.
My son had two new XF saloons a few years ago - these were money pits too. With finance costs, insurance, fuel, tax and repairs, they cost him £1000 a month to run - without depreciation. Fortunately, his employer paid him very generous mileage allowances.
Neither of us wants another Jaguar - or any other gas-guzzler. He has a Toyota hybrid and my wife and I love our Isuzu pick-up truck : 35 mpg even on urban cycle ( diesel ) and bulletproof engine.

It should be noted the petrol straight 6 has very limited issues, at least according to the techs i speak with in the states. The 48 volt supercharger is very robust, the biggest "known" issue according to the techs i know is an o ring bringing oil to the turbo.
