I think that there are still competitions, mainly in the imperial universities in Japan, that are still run by Kosen rules... But the prominence of Olympic Judo and the death of the old "kosen" masters without new pupils taking their place were the twilight of Kosen...
He is a Kodokan Judoka, but he is in the end of a line of great masters that competed in Kosen competitions. It must be clarified that Kosen Judo is something that does not exist. Kosen means High School, what people refer to Kosen Judo is just Judo competitions inside high-schools in Japan. The rules are different than Olympic Judo and allows greater latitude for newaza, so, instructors of those "school" were at the higher level at ground grappling in the world. Kashiwazaki studied under them.
But we should keep in mind that Olympic Judo is only a small part of Judo... Judo is, above all, a pedagogy system to help build character, self-esteem, etc. For me that's what is mainly left in BJJ compared to Judo, and the main reason both are not to be considered the same art, but that's another thread... :-)
The Blue judogi is not used in Japan because it is considered offensive and inappropriate. Its only used in competition when it is run by the IJF. You've hinted at one reason: the blue judogi don't look dirty, so people don't wash it after every and each class as they should. White has also a very special meaning in Judo, and the blue judogi has no place whatsoever in the actual framework of Judo as devised by Kano Shihan.
My comment was unclear! This language barrier is hard to bridge! I tried to say that in BJJ we don't have the pedagogical and philosophical aspect of Judo, but in Olympic Judo this is also lacking. As a BJJer I'm not brainwashed and I would love to hear from you an elicitation of current Judoka that could pose any thread in newaza to Roger Gracie, or Marcelo Garcia, for example! I have a name to offer you, but I would like to see who you'll choose.
That probably started when Judo entered the Olympics. The Olympics was the demise of true Judo, which had incredible newaza, and not only on the "Kosen" circles, Kimura completely destroyed Hélio Gracie, for example. Today Judo is starting to become a small throw, lower-scoring game, ippon standards are lowered, everything is ippon now! Even slow throws without impact! There's no more time allowed to do newaza properly, etc.
Also u seem not to know who u are addressing when you make this kind of comment! I can lecture you on the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for hours... You'll be amazed about how many things you don't know about it. Do you know anything of the history I learned about BJJ? What are you inferring? Do you want me to cite the place Mitsuyo Maeda was born? His initial Sumo trainning? The year he went to Waseda university to train Kodokan Judo? The match he won in front of Carlos Gracie? what u want?
Spijkers was a really fool of a guy. You seem not to know the story behind this fight. He talked a lot of trash about Renzo, who always paid great respect for his opponents. I really didn't understood him on that fight until I heard the full story, and, believe me or not, I heard it in a Judo forum, from Judoka. Spijkers received what he asked for... But I really think Renzo lost his mind, but I can tell you about 4 installments where Olympic Judoka behave as badly as him! Inside the dojo!!!
You are basing your assessment in wrong assumptions: belt exams differ from country to country... In the USA, for example, people don't even know the proper (Japanese) name of the throws! In Brazil there are no written exams, but people here know the correct names of the techniques cause they are called to demonstrate them by their japanese names... There are no history exams in any part of the world that I know of besides Japan! Nice to know you have them!
Do you really think so? Most Olympic Judoka really know very little about Judo! They are there to win. All that matters is winning. Did you watch the behavior of the overseas Olympic Teams at the Kodokan last year? They wear blue judogi in disrespect of Judo's tradition... They talked very loud at the main Kodokan Judo. They let their belts untie and fall into the floor... They chased each other like children.. Well, they had 0 respect for the "shrine" of Kodokan Judo.
Are you sure? How can you say that? Most Olympic Judokas will say that Judo is a Sport, that Judo is a martial art, etc. This is all wrong, since Judo is a pedagogical system! How could they know history if they fail to know what Judo is in the first place? Why did you ask me the rules of wrestlers? (did you mean the rules of wrestling? then you must tell me which style are you referring to?)
Are you saying Judo is run by the rules that any kind of wrestlers should obey? Judo IS NOT an Olympic sport, it is a pedagogical system devised by Professor Jigoro Kano... For someone bragging about lack of history knowledge you seem to really know very little about history yourself. Do you wear a blue gi outside competition? If yes, you know 0 about Judo's principles! You are followin Anton Geesink and his conspurcation of Judo, the selling of Judo to media... Study our talk with a cool head!
That's not my view on respect! You have to show respect toward others ALL THE TIME, not only follow the rules. If you only show respect inside the rules you are not being respectful at all, you are just following the rules...
