What does it mean to truly feel seen in front of the camera?
In this episode of Afroeuropeu, we sit down with photographer Priscillia Grubo to talk about photography beyond the final image, and explore what happens in the space between the person behind the camera and the person standing in front of it.
We reflect on what it takes to feel comfortable enough to be photographed, the role trust can play in creating an image, and how our experiences, identities and perceptions of ourselves can shape the way we feel when a camera is pointed at us.
But this conversation is also about something bigger: who gets to be seen, and how.
Through her work as a photographer, Priscillia creates environments where people can feel safe, confident and able to show up as themselves. We talk about the responsibility that comes with photographing another person, the relationship between photographer and subject, and the difference between simply being visible in an image and actually feeling represented by it.
We also explore Black identity and representation, the relationship between photography and self-perception, and Priscillia’s Afro Hair Study, looking at hair not simply as something visual, but as something connected to identity, culture and the ways we choose to present ourselves to the world.
Because perhaps being seen begins before the photograph is even taken.
It can begin with trust. With listening. With understanding the person in front of you. And with creating enough space for someone to decide how they want to be seen.
Who Gets to Be Seen? Photography, Identity & Visibility is a conversation about photography, representation, identity and the relationship between the person who creates the image and the person whose image is being created.
