“I don’t want it to be in the sky. When I listen to music, I want it to be in my heart.” -Seymour Bernstein

I'm officially adopting Seymore as my Grandpa. What a treasure.

“I found that so catastrophic.” I LOVE SEYMOUR BUT HE IS SO DRAMATIC HAHAHH

Honestly can't get enough of Seymour, I can see his dry humour rubbing people the wrong way but he's such a delight. Not to mention his beautiful playing!

11:45 “Music is a miraculous means of encapsulating human feeling into sound.” Seymour really is a romantic at heart.

Seymour plays in cursive. Gould printed.

Maybe Goulds biggest accomplishment is feeding the discussion on interpretation, so we never have to stop recording music from the past.

Seymour, you could never sound arrogant. Every word you say breathes love for music, for its miraculous nature. A true inspiration.

If I were you Ben, I would make it one of my top priorities to get as much of Seymour's musical perspective on film as possible. Agree or disagree with him, I have never gone a single minute in one of these videos without feeling a deeper connection to music when I hear him speak. You, Ben, as Seymour's counterpart in these discussions, perform brilliantly in the role and you successfully elicit a pure and wholehearted response at every twist and turn. Seriously, wonderful and informed content on a website that has less of that every day.

The comparison of Gould and Seymour’s expression of Brahms said it all. In Seymour’s playing each tone was personal, intimate, and caring. Gould treated all the individual voices as equal aesthetic partners to the whole. Put differently, with Gould one could imagine the whole universe speaking and the tones of the individual (central melodic line) as a minor contributor to the whole. In Seymour’s rendering, the individual stands in awe of the mystery of life and the treasures of the heart.

Thank you for your kind, honest, and balanced dialogue. ❤

hearing gould's brahms i was like "is this really brahms? this sounds strangely baroque" then i hear seymour's performance and finally the romanticism comes out, it's wonderful.
i have to agree with seymour

“I don’t want music to be in the sky”… I’m sad that I discovered him so late. ❤️❤️

Bernstein is absolutely right. The music shows the way it should be played!

my heart goes with Seymour Bernstein playing.

Bach didn’t care about the sound of the instrument. That’s why his music sounds good on any instrument.

Ben, when I say I hadn't ever cried listening to a discussion/interview before, that was true- until minutes ago. Your generosity and willingness to get to the heart of music opens doors that many aren't aware even exist! My sincere thanks to both you and the incredible Mr. Bernstein for an uncommonly wonderful 22 minutes.
