You said comprehensible input can mean understanding around 50% of an audio recording or text, but I think comprehension usually needs to be considerably higher for input to be truly useful. That is one reason graded readers are so valuable, especially those that allow you to read and listen at the same time—or use either format separately.

I agree with you that speaking from day one is not necessarily advisable. I also really like your idea of pouring content into your brain faster than you forget it, as well as your “sprint and coast” approach. Your analogy of a bicycle being more stable when it is moving at a reasonable speed than when it is barely moving is a very good one too.

As for burnout, I felt I was approaching that point after putting so much time into learning English. I even bought a book about burnout, which I’m going to read in English. At the same time, I’m protecting my sleep and starting a regular exercise routine because the level I ultimately want to reach goes beyond conversational fluency.

Regarding CEFR levels, I don’t see them as mere labels. They can be useful tools for understanding what kinds of material we are ready to read, listen to, and work with at each stage. At least, that is how I use them. A lot of people seem to think that once you reach B2, you can do almost everything in the language, but for my goals, B2 isn’t enough.

For that reason, I see language learning as more of a marathon than a sprint. I want to read most books without having to look up too many words, listen to audiobooks and understand almost everything, and write almost anything I want to say with a high degree of naturalness and precision.

By the three criteria you mentioned, I think I have already reached what you call conversational fluency. But I don’t want to consume English-language media only; I also want to produce in English. I have already written two books in English, and one day I might even start a YouTube channel or teach something in English for free, partly as a way of continuing to practice and develop the language.

Ultimately, I would rather become functionally bilingual than stop at conversational fluency. That is a much more ambitious goal, of course, but I’m enjoying the journey.

Hi Spencer great Video and incredible advice :).
Quick question: In the Video you talk about watching beginner podcasts or simple child shows. Do you think telling my father to speak spanish with me will help me aswell? Now i dont mean responding in spanish aswell i just mean him talking spanish with me. Since thats how people usually start to learn a language. Its how i started to understand italian better. Also when watching a podcast. Do you take notes of the frequent words used in the videos? As an example if "que" gets used in a sentence do you write that sentence somewhere or do you kind of just build a connection and try to remember once you hear it again?

I have a small question: i’m trying to improve my English and starting to learn Spanish. While I am watching videos in English or Spanish, is it better to turn on the subtitles in target languages as well? Some people said when you see the subtitle while listening, you can recognize and remember expressions more easily. But I don’t think it’s convincing.
