The Bible is the most translated book in the world, and it has been so for as long as translation has existed. But any translation is an interpretation; the text inevitably changes and loses something. How does this happen with the Bible? What translations are there into Russian, and how does one translate it into languages whose speakers are very far removed from biblical culture? How, for example, do you explain new wine and old wineskins to the Chukchi, who are not winemakers?
The meeting was part of the "Bible as a Text" series—a lecture course by Andrei Desnitsky, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies, writer, and translator.
