In today's video, I react to Tectone's "You can't be serious..." discussing the growing controversy around Ironmouse's Fortnite collaboration.

Normally, an Ironmouse Fortnite skin would just be exciting VTuber news.

But there's a pretty obvious question hanging over the whole thing.

Ironmouse previously took a very strong public stance against games using generative technology. During the Neverness to Everness controversy, she made it clear that she did not want to support projects using this technology and ultimately dropped that sponsorship after learning that it was being used in the game.

Now she's collaborating with Fortnite.

And Fortnite is not exactly free of the technology she previously objected to.

Epic has openly introduced large language model-powered characters and dynamic generated conversations into Fortnite's creator ecosystem, meaning the game platform now includes features that rely on the same broader category of technology Ironmouse had previously criticized.

That's where the controversy comes from.

The question isn't whether Ironmouse is allowed to change her mind.

Of course she is.

The question is whether her current position is consistent with the very strong principle she publicly established.

Because there's a big difference between:

"I don't support companies secretly using this technology."

and:

"I won't play games that use this technology."

Those are completely different standards.

And the NTE controversy makes the comparison even more interesting. Ironmouse's sponsorship was canceled after she said her team had been assured that the game did not contain this kind of material, while the developers later acknowledged that it had been used for some assets.

So maybe the real issue was transparency.

Maybe it was the specific way the technology was used.

Maybe Fortnite is an exception.

Whatever the explanation is, I'd rather hear it directly than pretend there isn't an obvious contradiction.

And that's why Tectone's reaction is so funny.

He sees the Fortnite announcement and basically goes:

"You can't be serious..."

Honestly, that's a fair question.

Ironmouse is obviously free to make whatever professional decisions she wants, and nobody is required to agree with her previous position forever. But when you make your position extremely clear, people are naturally going to notice when your future choices appear to contradict it.

In this video, I react to Tectone's coverage, revisit Ironmouse's previous statements, look at Fortnite's current use of generative technology, and discuss whether this is a genuine change of principles, a distinction between different kinds of use, or simply a convenient exception.

Because when your principle is "never"...

...the exception is the story.
