"Mugen" translates as "Infinity", and for once such an ambitious statement ended up totally living up to the name.

You can't call yourself a fighting game enthusiast if you haven't squared off against Evil Homer using Don Ramon.

MUGEN 🤝 RPG maker.

Have some of the best and worst of human imagination in them

Sad fact: Super Mario's sprite artist Shinryoga and Reubenkee were actually working together to develop their version of Samus Aran right before Reu died, where Shinryoga made the art and Reu made the code.

MUGEN represented everything great about early 2000’s Internet. Passionate people feeding an enthusiastic community endless possibilities for free!

Rest in peace to Reuben Kee, the greatest MUGEN author to ever do it. 🙏

Seeing KungFu Man again was like seeing a childhood friend again.

That Ronald sprite is so MUGEN associated it's insane

I stil think about "The Bestest Ken in the World", which is Ken but he can cancel shoryuken into itself at any time, and every time he does a shoryuken the music changes to his theme until he is hit.

Lol it never occurred to me how strange it is that if you're a certain age, a screenshot of Goku fighting Ronald McDonald looks totally normal.

That dragon claw footage is the craziest thing I've ever seen omg

It's not a real MUGEN video unless the audio is turned up to like 1000% for no reason

There's more to the "Rare Akuma" joke than you think. Rare Akuma was making fun of edited "rare" MUGEN characters usually found circulated among MUGEN "warehouse" sites that boasted about having rare characters you couldn't get anywhere else. These characters were usually bootleg edits of other creators' characters that were often among the "evil" type edits you'd see that were hilariously broken, poorly optimized, and anything the editor added (while taking full credit for the character) was often janky and horribly coded, made up of mismatched sprite effects.

RIP Reuben Kee.

Thank you so much GuileWinQuote, i've been learning to develop in this engine for almost 17 years now, this video feels special since your story is reminiscent with my own... as a humble FGC enthusiast and MUGEN editor. Thanks again.

21:03 Rest In Paradise, Rueben.

3 important dates for men
1. their birthday
2. their mother/girlfriend/wifes birthday
3. the day they got mugen running

It's an honor and very unreal to hear Terrance Bongo mentioned alongside the all time greats of MUGEN, and I'm happy you had a good time labbing him out in Training mode. I had a great time making him and it blows me away people are enjoying my work to this scale.

Anyway, with that out of the way - Your exploration of MUGEN's history and what makes the greats so great really hits the nail on the head. From what draws people to it in the first place, to the creativity of the authors that contribute to it, to what people could do with the limitations of the engine, to where we are now. MUGEN is still very much alive. Fun fact, being an avid fan of MUGEN in a similar way as you since the early days, and eventually becoming a creator for it 10 years ago has lead me to genuinely prefer to use a keyboard in any and all fighting games over stick and pad to this day. MUGEN has had a great impact on my life as well, and it's cool to hear stories from your early experiences with it that I'm certain many others can relate to as well. Thank you for shining this spotlight on this little engine that could, and I hope more people give it a chance to show them what it can do!

memes aside the idea of a fighting game boss that hurts you just by walking is genuinely a bit fucking sick lol

My first interaction with 3rd strike was through a MUGEN version I got sent on a LAN. When I played the real game for the first time it really made me pissed when I realized Ryu didn't actually have a beam-super.

Ella, my beloved. I didn’t know the creator tried making their own game! I would’ve loved seeing it come to fruition. Unfortunate it didn’t.
