I grew up in a salmon fishing family is WA. As soon as I graduated from highschool I went up to AK. I also don't understand the men that do it for decades. I quit before I turned 30. I'm glad I worked up there, I'm glad I'm not working up there.

Edit; 20 on 4 off. God dude. I did that for days in a row, many times. Redbull and Camels. You start flinching at shadows in your periphery because you're starting to hallucinate. Meanwhile you're operating heavy machinery in storm conditions. And you just keep working.

Edit; The knives he is talking about are Victorinox. It is SO easy accidentally cut yourself with those things. There is a reason every boat in AK uses that exact knife. Small, white plastic handle, wickedly sharp skinny blade, disposable. Best sailor knife in the world. The Vicky.

Ive been on a ship in the middle of lake supior and its like being in a prison labor camp thats it period except if you servive it you get a paycheck it's not as easy as the deadliest catch portrays it to be its hell on water

My sisters x ws abusive, long story short my dad and I were heading over, my mom warned him so my dad did not kill the guy and go to prison. He skedaddled to Alaska and became a salmon fisherman. Don’t know if he lasted out there, or drowned, but hope he changed his life.

I’m ex military, 62, consider myself a pretty tough guy, but I gotta tell you, I’ve been watching Deadliest Catch since day 1, those guys are theeeeee toughest dudes I’ve ever seen, certifiable badasses I have nothing but respect for them, great podcast better than Shawn Ryan’s.

The oilfield is scary in a lot of places, offshore especially. But Deep water fishing/crabbing is TERRYIFYING I nope the fck out if that is my last option

nothing beats mother nature. you gotta absolutely love it! 15 years and counting running a boat. 60fm is 360 feet. 1 fathom = 6 foot
