Von Dutch was also a sign painter and pinstriper. He striped some famous Hot Rods back then.

OK, now I get it.  I never could fully understand the idea of a Mares Leg, but in two words you nailed it:  Steve McQueen.  🤠 👍👍

The Winchester Model 1892 Mare's Leg is the main firearm used by Zoë (Gina Torres) in the Joss Whedon "Firefly" series and in the movie "Serenity." If viewers had not watched the "Wanted: Dead or Alive" series, they would never make the Mare's Leg connection. I did, and did. It was great to see the Mare's Leg in action again - even when in a Western-based Sci-Fi series/movie.

Nothing I enjoy more than ending a 12 hour shift and seeing that you posted a video!  I appreciate the hard work you invest in these videos.

Literally watching the show as this vid popped up . Spooky

Thank you for the time and effort you put into the making of these videos.

A few years later the IRS also went after "The Man From Uncle" for their unregistered short barrel rifle conversions of Mauser and Walther pistols.  As I recall, one of their employees noticed the guns while watching an episode and paid a visit to the set to notify them of the required tax.  If it had happened today, I suspect a team of heavily armed ninjas would have descended on the studio and arrested everyone at gunpoint.  My, how times have changed.

In one episode he was looking for an officer Josh served with during the Civil War. Steve was 30 or so in the episode. He joined the Army at 1 or 2 years old. Talk about patriotic!

Thanks Mike. Interesting to hear back story on Wanted dead or alive. Have a good day.🇺🇸🌲🔪🔥🖖

I too always looked at those 30.06 looking cartridges and thought how could they put that many rounds in. He would sometimes shoot ten or twelve shots before reloading.

When I was a kid my parents bought me a "Wanted Dead or Alive" toy gun. It had the gun, holster, and a box of caps to fire in the gun. I had lots of fun with that rig. I wish I still had it.

In the early 1970s I came across a western movie being filmed.  It was called My Name is Nobody with Henry Fonda and Terence Hill.  While there I struck up a conversation with the armorer.  He showed me a large trailer filled with a very impressive collection of western style guns such as Colts and Winchesters.  All of these guns were originals.  He also showed me a Mare's Legg he had fashioned from an original Winchester.  While he was proud of the work he had performed he told me he hated to ruin such a classic lever gun.  But he was an employee and his boss had given him the task of modifying the gun.  So sad.

In a few episodes, he also carried a deringer.

The tactical benefits of that cut down Winchester never made sense to me, but it certainly looked cool. 🤠  Enjoying all of the 'guns of classic television' presentations. You certainly know your subject matter. Well done Mike!

Beautiful Hat. Great video, as always. God Bless. Happy Trails

A gun chambered in 44/ 40, called a 30/30, and 45/70 bullets in the belt. It sure looks cool though! Thanks for the video!

I remember having the toy rifle "Mares Leg" from this show in the early 1960s. I don't know which company made the toy and hopefully they didn't get in trouble with the ATF---LOL!

As a kid, I thought the mare's leg was the coolest thing around! The impracticality is quite obvious now, but its hard to argue with the rule of cool, especially when Steve McQueen is the one wielding it. A man who's impact is truly timeless- I was watching reruns of this a few decades after it originally aired!

They sold the toy version like hot cakes in the mid 60s. I think I had two of them.

A friend of mine made a mare’s leg with a 44WCF Rossi 92, with octagonal barrel and a large homemade loop. Really fun to shoot at distance CAS. The biggest problem was be to make the front flange because of the octagonal barrel but it worked well and it’s too much fun to shoot... even if it is an absolute nonsense...👍
