In 2009, IBM scientists photographed a single molecule for the first time. Not a diagram or a model, but a real photograph. This required a needle that probes the surface at the height of one atom. The image reveals hexagonal rings. Chemists who have dedicated their lives to studying these very rings say that when you see this image for the first time, something clicks inside.

Today, our guest is Andrey Cheprakov, an organic chemist and professor at Moscow State University. We discussed the structure of the molecule of life and why carbon became its foundation. We also discussed why there are more possible molecules than atoms in the universe. We also discussed the Maillard reaction and why it's the only reason for a crispy crust on a steak. We also discussed a reaction discovered by a Soviet chemist in 1951, only to have his paper rejected as "impossible." The liquid in the flask changed color back and forth, as if alive, and this contradicted everything we knew about chemistry. We also discussed the purpose of draught in the laboratory and the average lifespan of chemists. We also discussed our guest's favorite molecule.
