On September 11th, Free and Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke was biking to his yoga class in Greenwich Village when he heard a boom unlike anything he had heard in his six years of living in the city. The World Trade Center was, as he describes, “diagonally wounded and in flames.” Kirke’s daughter went to school near the World Trade Center. He knew she was on a study break. For two harrowing hours, Kirke and his wife didn’t know if she was safe because there was no cellphone service. Finally, they got a call. Lola was safe.

A week after the tragedy, Simon volunteered as a Red Cross driver. Kirke’s job was to haul supplies and water to Ground Zero. Sometimes he’d drive firefighters home after their long day on the pile. But he never told anyone who he was.

Hear him share his 9/11 story with Q104.3 FM’s Shelli Sonstein. Barasch & McGarry - Lawyers for the 9/11 Community is honored to sponsor ‘9/11 Stories: Remembering September 11th, 2001’, along with the FealGood Foundation. Tune in every week for a new episode.
