It's a dobro/resonator guitar, Marks National style "0" from 1937

That's the way to tell a story in song. If Will was still around today I think he would have approved.

live versions are the best

Watch the live alchemy version!!!

Mark Knopfler wrote the song about his failed relationship with Holly Vincent. He believed she used him to further her career. On the Romeo and Juliet theme, note that he refers to “There’s A Place For Us,” which of course is from West Side Story.

My favourite live performance is still from Alchemy, but there are a number of good ones out there.

It was a national O resinater steel guitar.

Great song. Alchemy live version is great as you can see them perform. It's a joy. No banjo. Mark's guitar(s).

Great song

You mention his 'talking' style singing - I finally got to see them live with my wife not long before the group split and he literally talked monotone through most of the songs, barely any effort to sing them like the studio recordings, we were so disappointed....

Guitar is a resonator Guitar, they were taken over by Dobro hence most people call it a Dobro.

Jone Ruiz, I think that instrument was a Dobro, maybe? Great video Brother! I love the Dire Straits. The next song on the album was "Skataway or Skate Away" which is even better. It has a great beat and you would love it. Thanks for doing it!

Fantastic song!! Would have hoped for another kind of video... The guitar is the one on the cover of the album "Brothers in arms".

As others have said, it's not a banjo, it's Mark's famous National Type 0 guitar. It is from 1973 and he actually acquired it from a classical musician. You need to watch a live version of this to really appreciate it and Mark's guitar work. Try the Alchemy Live concert or for Mark solo try the A Night in London concert.

Great song! In a parallel universe, Jethro Tull has a song called, 'She said she was a dancer'. You might find it is eerily similar to this! Check it out! Enjoy!!! Thanks!!!
