Talk: Elective Affinities? Gender Dysphoria, trans* identification, and Anorexia Nervosa
Conference: SEGM Athens Conference 2024
Speaker: Alexander Korte, MD

Alexander Korte examines gender dysphoria in adolescent girls through the wider context of puberty, psychosexual development, body image and identity formation.

Korte discusses the particular challenges that can accompany female adolescence, including changing body image, menstruation, sexuality, social expectations and exposure to sexualised media. He then explores what he sees as important psychological and developmental parallels between gender dysphoria and anorexia nervosa, including body alienation, difficulties around emerging sexuality, identity and autonomy, and the influence of social and cultural factors.

Korte argues for an exploratory, outcome-neutral psychotherapeutic approach that considers the individual meaning of gender distress, co-occurring mental health difficulties, family and attachment experiences, sexual orientation, gender stereotypes and broader developmental conflicts.
