Great overview! beyond the mechanisms mentioned, tumors exploit immunoediting a dynamic process where the immune system initially suppresses tumor growth (elimination phase) but inadvertently selects for less immunogenic clones (escape phase). This leads to tumor heterogeneity, where subpopulations evade detection via MHC-I downregulation, PD-L1 upregulation, or secretion of TGF-β/IL-10.  

Another underdiscussed factor is tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) polarization: Tumors often reprogram macrophages to an M2 phenotype, promoting angiogenesis and immunosuppression. This is why combo therapies (e.g., checkpoint inhibitors + TAM-targeting agents) are now in trials.  

These nuances explain why some tumors resist monotherapies and why Robbins emphasizes understanding the tumor microenvironment holistically.
