In the early days of World War One the German High Seas Fleet was a pesky, elusive but extremely dangerous thorn in the Royal Navy’s side. An ambitious plan was hatched to get them off the Royal Navy’s back and the Admiralty called for a torpedo bomber specifically designed to launch from the decks of converted merchant ships and attack the unsuspecting Germans in their home anchorage at Wilhelmshaven. It was an audacious idea - but it had simply never been done. No aircraft like this had even been seen before and designers would have to work from scratch to help the Navy attack from the skies instead of the seas. In this two part series we’ll wind back the clock to those dark days of the First World - when Germany’s navy threatened Britain’s dominance of the seas and the only logical solution was a completely new form of warfare. This is the epic saga of the first carrier attack aircraft - at the forefront was an impressive machine, the Sopwith T.1 - later the Cuckoo. But this plucky design almost didn’t make it into the air at all.
