The ninjas we know from movies may have very little in common with the real historical shinobi.

Behind the black mask, throwing stars, supernatural abilities and legendary assassins lies a far more complex story: ordinary human beings who lived through one of the most violent periods in Japanese history and survived through observation, discipline, patience, disguise and a profound understanding of human nature.

In this documentary, we separate the historical ninja from the myth.

How did the shinobi really operate?

Why wasn't the famous black ninja outfit necessarily part of their reality?

How did they gather intelligence without being noticed?

How did they infiltrate castles, survive dangerous missions and disappear without leaving a trace?

And how did Japanese theater, woodblock prints, popular novels and eventually global cinema transform real information gatherers into the legendary black-clad ninja known around the world?

The most fascinating part is that reality may have been far more impressive than the myth.

Who were the real ninjas?

How did they survive?

What did they actually do?

And why did the real people disappear from history while their legend survived?

Watch until the end to discover the truth behind one of history's most mysterious figures.
