Yeah you are bang on right about the competence of the average programmer or game developer. I see lots of flashy design documents, prototypes, portfolios, resumes - you name it. I usually ask them straight up what parts of the things they are showing me they did themselves, but this doesn't catch out the ones that use AI or YT tutorials to make their stuff.

What I do now is sit a laptop in front of them, ask them about something moderately complex they have supposedly done in their portfolios and ask them to modify a small part of it in real time, just to see how they approach the task. Of course they won't be able to finish the whole thing right there and then, but the ones that have been cheating their way through the system won't even know where to look or how to begin modifying their own work.

what he says about VR is precisely what made the DS and Wii so special. there was a reason for these consoles to exist, they were not just some regular 4 button, two joysticks and bumpers kind of console like all of them are now. you couldn't just port a game to the Wii or DS most of the time, you had to consider what the Wii was and make something entirely for it. it forced either unbelievable slop or intentional design and presentation of ideas. this is what VR is for, not for "immersive" experiences but for reevaluation of how games can be controlled and experienced!
