She met him in a Sydney pub—he introduced himself simply as "Fred." Twenty-four years later, King Frederik X kissed his Mary on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace while the world whispered about photos from Madrid. This video tells the truth about Europe's most scrutinized dream marriage.
SLIP INN, September 16, 2000: In the middle of the Olympic Games, Mary's group is debating chest hair—three young men offer themselves as examples. One is named "Fred." The advertising executive from Tasmania only learns later that he is the Crown Prince of Denmark (fresh from combat swimmer training and a four-month expedition through Greenland).
THE PRICE OF LOVE: Three years of a secret long-distance relationship across 16,000 km—then Mary gives up her citizenship, her church, and her mother tongue. The engagement ring: a diamond and two rubies, the colors of the Danish flag.
THE TEAR (May 14, 2004): As Mary enters the cathedral, Frederik weeps in front of the cameras—the sound of which can be seen. Among the guests: Haakon and Mette-Marit of Norway.
MADRID & THE KISS: The Lecturas photos with Genoveva Casanova (denied, never confirmed), Margrethe's surprise abdication—and the balcony kiss of January 14, 2004, with which the royal couple silently responded to the tabloids. On September 9, Frederik and Mary stand together at King Harald's state funeral in Oslo—as a family.
