Tensions are rising after a public confrontation between Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Internal Affairs Minister Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire.
In posts shared on X, Muhoozi publicly demanded an apology from Otafiire following remarks attributed to the veteran military officer in Parliament. The exchange escalated further when Muhoozi wrote that “3 days is too long” and said Otafiire would be arrested “tomorrow without fail.” Other posts targeted Otafiire’s age and political future.
Otafiire, however, has publicly pushed back, turning what began as a disagreement into a much bigger confrontation involving two prominent figures with long histories inside Uganda’s military and government.
In this report, we examine what Otafiire said, Muhoozi’s response, the arrest statements, and the wider questions raised by this extraordinary public exchange.
The story also comes amid continuing public debate in Uganda about military power, detention, accountability and the treatment of political figures and other detainees.
Watch the full report for the chronology and context behind this escalating confrontation.
