I had so much fun with this! I always find that masking fluid lifts too much paint off the paper -- especially your interesting textures and blooms -- leaving only the "stain." So, after using your awesome dip-pen technique to mask the veins*, I printed an extra copy of your template on cardstock, and cut out the various leaf shapes. I numbered them on your guide, and wrote corresponding numbers on the masks. Then I experimented with using "temporary spray adhesive," (Krylon Easy-tack) and also "Aleene's Tack-it Over and Over" to glue down my mini masks. I was pleased with the temporary spray adhesive WHEN it was sprayed properly (lightly and evenly), but the Aleene's wouldn't stick to the cold-pressed paper (maybe I waited too long for it to become tacky). The sprayed masks pulled off perfectly IF the adhesive was thin and even, but one large blob did rip my paper. I also should have used a thinner paper than cardstock, and I should have printed multiple copies of the mask so I didn't have to fiddle with tiny half-leaf masks. Sadly, I got lazy after layer 2, and tried painting over the masks WITHOUT tacking them down, which was disastrous, but still, this project was really educational and fun. The fellow at "Watercolorish" uses drafting (not masking) tape, along with paper cut-outs, so I will try that next.

* A note about masking leaf veins. If you printed or traced the original image with overly-dark pencil/toner lines, then masking the veins means you are "protecting" an ugly, dark line. So, instead, run your masking fluid pen along ONE SIDE of the vein line, not right on top of it. That way, the green leaf paint will cover the ugly pencil/toner lines, and you end up with lovely, delicate, yellow-green veins. We need to look at real leaves, because in many cases, the veins are LIGHTER not darker. What an epiphany 🙂

This process makes it so much better and I would imagine eventually your brain will see this process in the future if you decided not to use the masking fluid. Although this is so much easier. Thank you for sharing this. I was stuck on a painting I was doing because I was afraid of ruining it but with this process I will be able to move forward now.

That takes some dedication..it’s beautiful! I have some trailing. Pothos and they are happy. That would be my choice to paint. I also have your masking guide so ready to try..very excited to do so! Thank you for your guidance. Some would say it’s cheating but I believe in using tools such as masking/ fluid (new to me) mixed media to enhance colors and transfer of shapes. Stunning! I’ve seen  and admired your work before, but in that instance, there had been no mention of masking fluid. I thought Oh how tedious! What kind of sorcery is this? Now I see your process, and I’m thinking, Oh how tedious! LOL Certainly worth the time. The depth is so eye catching, composition so lovely, and I feel better knowing you used masking fluid and aren’t tediously fidgeting over every centimeter of line and space for weeks, walking in circles, and talking to yourself! Seriously, Stunning!

That looks so beautiful and a great technique. I never used a dip pen with masking fluid before. My lines with masking fluid were always to thick, so this is a great trick.
