I've always been fascinated by political systems that seem like they are constantly on the brink of falling apart, yet somehow keep running. Whenever Brazil shows up in international news, it usually looks like total chaos. The only thing I usually see are massive corruption scandals, fierce battles in parliament, or deep political polarization.
But when I started digging deeper into how their government was actually designed, I found it deeply fascinating and I realized that most stereotypes about Brazilian politics are just not true or a bit exaggerated. In many ways, the creators of the 1988 Citizen Constitution built a system full of friction on purpose, specifically to avoid a return of dictatorship.
In this video, I break down how Brazil's constitution works and evaluate how reliable their system of checks and balances functions. I explain the different branches of government and their relation to each other, their special Public Ministry, why Brazil's demands a membership in political parties and in which way voting is mandatory.
If you enjoy deep dives into like this, make sure to subscribe to the channel! Let me know in the comments what surprised you most about Brazil's setup. And since nobody usually reads this: Do you think Brazil has a secret Ministry of Magic?
