THE KEY QUESTIONS WE ANSWER IN THIS VIDEO

What is qualitative data?
Pretty much any data that is not numbers. It is not something you measure on a fixed scale or with statistics. Often interview transcripts, documents and open-ended survey responses, but it also covers the interpretation of images and video, so it is not limited to text.

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?
Qualitative research focuses on words, descriptions, concepts and ideas; quantitative research focuses on numbers and statistics. Qualitative investigates the softer side of things to explore and describe, while quantitative measures differences between variables and the relationships between them.

Is qualitative analysis easier than quantitative analysis?
Not quite. In many ways qualitative data is more challenging and time consuming to analyze and interpret, and that comes at the end of a data collection phase that already takes a lot out of you.

What are the most popular qualitative data analysis methods?
Six: qualitative content analysis, narrative analysis, discourse analysis, thematic analysis, grounded theory, and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).

What is qualitative content analysis?
The most common and straightforward of the methods. At its simplest it evaluates patterns within a piece of content, such as words, phrases or images, and counts how they appear.

What is narrative analysis?
Listening to people tell stories and analyzing what those stories mean. Because stories help us make sense of the world, how something is told reveals a mindset: a prisoner justifying a crime shows you their view of the justice system, and entrepreneurs describing career struggles show you theirs.

What is discourse analysis?
Analyzing language within its social context: a conversation or a speech inside the culture and society it takes place in. How a janitor speaks to a CEO, or how politicians speak about terrorism, only makes sense once you account for that culture and history.

What is thematic analysis?
Looking at patterns of meaning across a data set, such as a set of interviews or focus groups, and grouping the data by theme. You could analyze a hundred reviews of a restaurant this way. It is time consuming, but for good reason, so budget extra time if you choose it.

What is grounded theory?
A method where the intention is to create a theory rather than test one. You go in with an open mind and a general overarching question, and the theory develops from the data rather than from a preconceived idea. Critics point to a circularity in it.

What is interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA)?
IPA is designed to help you understand the personal experiences of a subject: how a specific person made sense of something they lived through, rather than what a group has in common.

How do I choose the right qualitative analysis method?
It depends largely on your research aims, objectives and questions. The best tool for the job depends on what you are trying to build. Analyzing what words reveal about a storyteller's intent points somewhere quite different from understanding one person's lived experience, and each method has its own strengths and limitations.
