In the early 1970s I worked with a guy that had been a designer at Aston in the 1950s. He told a story about a race report that may have been Le Mans where the team reported the car was retired due to "oil on the distributor". Walking into the racing garage on Monday he saw that the oil appeared to come from a fist sized hole in the block.
Hard to forget that one.

This dovetails very well with the recent film, "Ferrari", because only the next year, Ferrari and de Portago had that horrific relationship that ended the Mille Miglia. It's fascinating knowing the near future while watching this and hearing the famous drivers' names.

I was instantly reminded of Jackie Stewart's very similar crash experience to his brother Jimmy's - upside down with gasoline soaking him - at Spa-Francorchamps ten years later.
