Mahalaya Special | Kolkata’s ‘Radio Kaku’ Keeps the Old Radio Tradition Alive
Ahead of Mahalaya, Kolkata’s Kumartuli sees a familiar rush at the shop of ‘Radio Kaku’ Amitranjan Karmakar. A radio mechanic since the age of 17, he continues to repair vintage Bush, Philips, Prince and HMV transistor radios even in the era of YouTube and online music platforms. Every year on Mahalaya morning, he also plays Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s iconic Chandipath for the people of Kumartuli.
