A gripping and atmospheric BBC radio crime drama based on the acclaimed novel Rough Cider by Peter Lovesey, a story of long-buried secrets, wartime tragedy, and a murder that refuses to stay in the past.
The story begins during World War II in rural Somerset, where American soldiers stationed in England bring excitement and tension to a quiet farming community. Friendships blossom between the GIs and local girls, but jealousy and resentment among the village men simmer beneath the surface.
After a celebration marking the pressing of apples into cider, violence erupts and a shocking murder follows. A young American soldier is convicted and hanged for the crime.
Years later, in 1964, a young American woman named Alice arrives in England searching for the truth about her father — the GI executed for murder before she was born. She tracks down Theo, now a university lecturer, who as a boy had been a key witness in the original trial.
Reluctantly returning to the Somerset farm where the tragedy began, Theo and Alice uncover a web of jealousy, secrets, and buried hatreds. As the past resurfaces, another murder is committed, proving that some crimes never truly die.
Originally nominated for an Edgar Award, Rough Cider is a powerful and haunting mystery from celebrated crime writer Peter Lovesey, blending wartime drama with a chilling investigation into truth and memory.
