It's refreshing to watch a video that's not automatically hostile to using AI as the tool it is.  I'm in the same position; no in person gaming group yet, but slowly putting out feelers to form one.  I have an online group that's been together 10+ years, and we've never met face to face.  AI is a great sounding board for me, and after spending the time to set it up with the rules for the games I run, it's about 95% accurate on rules questions, and is great at exploring concepts I've only got half-formed in my head way more efficently than I can grind through them alone.

Great video, yep, it's about partnership, when I get back home I summarise the session, over time I have the whole campaign story, and managing the consequences of the player's choices, images are great too. I can't draw :)

I think for your own home game it’s fine. My players use it for their characters and backgrounds. I use it to create a background scene for their virtual tokens to move around on. And the images look awesome (as do yours) and help create the feel and set the mood we are looking for.

I have been a D&D referee since 1976.  3% and grayhawk plus Blackmore and Eldritch wizardry.

I've run multiple unique campaigns including one which ran for 26 years and another that ran for 6 years.

AI is an absolute godsend for thinking out the applications of the proposed World building.  

And for flushing out my skeleton into a more detailed setting plus creating character portraits.

It's also useful for analyzing and extending my implied World rules.

And I'm a person who avoided reading the Lord of the rings for 20 years so it wouldn't corrupt my campaign world as it did everyone else in high school.  We had so many bars and so many nice school and so many striders.. and so many of their unique campaign ideas were replaced by generic Tolkien crap.

AI is useful professionally and for D&D.  It multiplies your ability as a referee.  And it solves the blank page problem.

I basically use it to throw ideas I only halfway have sorted in my head at it. Especially for those larger campaigns where everyone I would normally bounce those ideas off of is part of it. I've managed to get mine to drop the "yes, and that's great because" attitude and to directly fight me on dumb ideas while throwing it's own hairbrained ideas into the mix. Traps and puzzles are where it shines, especially after having a few years of my session notes spoonfed to it. "This player would try this, so we do this to throw them off." Any NPCs I don't have a firm grasp on or if I want a region to have a certain speech pattern or just little add ons. 90% of the time I disregard the ideas it gives me, but it's helpful to have a conversation where I can take in an outside opinion because it gets me to work harder on my projects. The images are also great if you need something to slap down quick. That's the one thing I have absolutely no talent for.

AI is great for objective things within prep. For example, making custom statblocks. I have a NotebookLM with all the Pathfinder books I use, and I can ask it to produce the statblock of not only any class or monster, but to even do things like reduce or increase CR, change spells/feats/abilities, etc. All of this has in-game rules but it can take like an hour to do a complicated build. It has it done in 60 seconds or less.

Same thing with rules references obviously, but also building encounters (I give it a theme and a target CR), building custom items, etc. Anything that has concrete rules it can perform with speed and precision a human can't. Which means less time prepping and way more time playing.

I'm glad to see a video that doesn't default to "AI is taboo", I've started to use AI for my Pathfinder and Starfinder games all the time. Initially I used it to generate the characters and scene images like you but now I use it as a collaborative assistant to help me with scene descriptions, read-aloud text and also to create and modify balanced creatures, NPCs and items. I'll continue to follow with interest, thank you.

As someone vehemently against AI use, this was a very refreshing take. Being a DM is really lonely because the only people who really know your world are the exact people you cannot workshop with. Although I don't think I will personally use AI, this did help me understand people who do, and have a bit more empathy (which we can all use these days). Thank you!

My former DM let AI replace his intuition and knowledge of the players. The game he was running wasn’t for us anymore. It felt like a twisted, disturbing fantasy between him and his AI. We weren’t truly involved anymore.

When I picked up the DM role after several years, reconnecting with friends and finding new ones I spent the lions share of my time googling for images... looking for the exact thing I wanted or needed. Once I started down a path I asking for images in AI it saved me hours of time. Hours I used to craft more stories, pick up another additional two campaigns. I then started using AI to do some of the same things, design traps riddles, NPC names and so on. I think it is a tool we can exercise with caution, its definitely not going to replace a person or their ideas. One of the most refreshing takes I've seen this year. Cheers and subbed today.

I’ve run things through it and had it split out commentary on possible problems or conflicts.  Then I can look through the list keep or discard what I agree with or disagree with, then decide HOW I choose to fix them.   The work is mine the prompting was it.

You sound like a very coherent chap and this take on AI was very refreshing, even if I disagree with things here and there. I'd be interested in perhaps sitting down with you on my show sometime if you're open to that.

Just getting to see other people’s worlds literally being taken out of their heads and being immortalized in reality.  I was already a fan of AI in D&D but you have only inspired me even more.  I’m gonna have to subscribe to this channel now.

1it already happened specially converting old modules into new modules for Homebrew sessions.

It doesnt give perfect responses for any subject,  but it does make research and brainstorming significantly more effective.

The stories and campaigns are all me, but I have AI write an elegant intro to when the party walks into a room.    Their descriptions always create a sense of awe.
