If you bought an iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, your phone could drop to SOS: no calls, no texts, no data. Apple confirmed it on October 2, and the update can't fix a phone that's already affected. Three weeks
later it's still happening, and some replacements did it too. Here's how to check your phone in 30seconds, and exactly what to do if yours already says SOS.
Only the iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T. The regular 18 Pro (Apple's own modem) and Verizon / T-Mobile
customers haven't been affected. Apple says it's "a small number" of users.

3:15 – Why it's still happening (5 reasons)

7:30 – Already on SOS? Do this
9:20 – You told me
10:45 – Still inside your 14 days?
12:15 – The other side: phones that are fine
13:10 – The rule + bars or SOS?
CHECK IT NOW
1. Settings → General → Software Update → iOS 27.0.1 or newer
2. Settings → General → About → wait 10 seconds → tap "Update" if a carrier settings pop-up appears.
Carrier should read AT&T 72.1 (iOS 27.0) or 72.0.3 (iOS 27.2 beta)
3. Bars at the top = good. SOS (and you're not in a dead zone) = keep watching
ALREADY ON SOS?
• Don't accept "update and wait." Apple says affected phones need a replacement
• Apple Store (book a Genius Bar appointment) or an AT&T store. Viewers say Apple will swap phones bought
from AT&T too
• Get a case number
• Turn on Wi-Fi Calling while you wait: Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling
• Before you leave, make sure the replacement has iOS 27.0.1 and the AT&T carrier update
THE RULE: The update protects the phone you have. It can't fix the phone you lost.
