I thought the scenes between the Xenomorphs and the Predators were the best part of the movie. And thanks to this movie, now Lance Henriksen is now the second actor to be taken down by a Terminator, an alien, and a predator on film.
I always wanted to see an Aliens vs. Predator movie based more on the video games and comics, where it takes place roughly in the same timeframe as the Aliens film and included the Colonial Space Marines. I feel like Colonial Marines were sorely underutilized in the films, really only showing up in Aliens, and I feel like there is still so much potential with films revolving around them. I'd still happily see an AvP movie more inline with the games and comics with the Colonial Marines if it were actually done well and at a similar quality as Aliens. I was really bummed when Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel was scrapped in favor of Alien Covenant.
I remember when I heard this was coming out I asked my mom to take me to see it. She agreed once she learned it was PG-13. Ironically, at that time, I actually thought it was going to be rated "R" because of their predecessors. She took me on a day I was suppose to be at school. We went in and the theater was empty and we sat in the middle of it all. After about 15 minutes once into the actual movie a couple walked in and it was all just us 4. This has a place in my heart because of what my mom did for me and even with how much better it could have been. Thanks, Mom. ❤
The CAPCOM arcade game was based on a movie script for AvP. The game was supposed to come out at around the same time as the movie but the movie didn't materialize. One of the game's protagonists is Dutch. He is a synthetic human in the future, made in the image of the 20th century's Dutch in Predator. So that is one way they considered bringing back Dutch if the movie were to be set in the future.
I really liked this movie, having never read the comics. My only problem was, once they got to the temple, it felt too rushed. I know it wasn't designed to be a very thoughtful movie, but if they had slowed it down, and allowed for another extra twenty minutes between getting to the temple and the first chest burster popping out, it might have been a much more successful flick.
When I was sick for a few months several years ago, I used to watch AVP, Chronicles of Riddick, and HP-Prisoner of Azkaban almost every day/night while lying feeling crap. It's a guilty pleasure, but I never considered how good it could have been if it wasn't PG-13.
It should be noted that there was both an Alien vs, Predator book series and a Resident Evil series (essentially novelizations of the games) written by S.D. Perry...and Paul W.S. Anderson happened to write movies based on both concepts. I have a feeling Anderson at least read the books because when, in the movie, when a Predator marks Alexa's cheek with Xenomorph acid it's directly inspired by a similar scene where book character Machiko Noguchi is marked in the same way.
I got to meet Ian Whyte who played the lead Predator back in 2004 and he was really lovely guy. He went on to be in Prometheus as well as a small stand in role in the Harry Potter films
You left out a Paul WS Anderson Easter egg: in Resident Evil, Colin Salmon got cubed by a laser grid; in AVP, hesuffers the same fate when he gets trapped in a Yautja net
Loved this movie and awesome premise! They have been hunting big game like humans and aliens for centuries! In predator 2 when I saw the alien skull I was so hyped! Bill Paxton was the best in both movies lol! He was so ridiculous but cool!
