In this video we'll take you through the various steps of finishing a guitar with a 3 Tone Sunburst, using nitrocellulose paint aerosols.

We're working with a alder body so our project starts with first prepping the finish with Sanding Sealer, spraying our Transparent Yellow burst base coats, progressing through Transparent Red and Dark Salem for the outer burst colors and then onto our Clear Coats. After this we finish up with final wet sanding and polishing.

Looks like your Dirty Lemon, Honey Brown and Tobacco Brown should work great for that.

I drill all necessary pickguard holes and use conductive paint in the cavities before applying the colors. I also drill the neck screw holes to 15/64s to properly accomodate the neck screws.

I use water and a few drops of washing up liquid for wet sanding painted surfaces, it stops the rediue clogging the paper and provides a 'slip' to stop the paper dragging and causing finish issues.

Thanks for making these videos! I want to do a distressed look for a blues hotrod. My plan is to do a sunburst first, then go back over either with a sonic blue or maybe metallic blue or silver, then cut back revealing the burst beneath the top color. Should I still do clear coat between the sunburst and final color and if so how many layers? I may use masking between the colors for the larger sections of paint distressing to ensure good separation between the paint layers. I plan to go for a medium distressed authentic look, not a rush job.

Hello! I recently bought a natural finish stratocaster body. Finish is probably polyurethane based. Looks very thick. Would it possible to spray a sunburst over it with your colors? And if it is, would it be necessary to scuff the interested area with 400-600 grit sandpaper? Thanks!

Question, i wanted to have a metallic finish pop through a non metallic finish while distressing a guitar, like the fender custom shop does, do i apply the metallic finish, extra clear coats on that finish, then my non metallic colour and clear coats on that? Then sand through to the clear coats underneath?

The only problem with using spray cans is that you can't really wet sand it when you're done. Your technique is fine, but it leaves lots of kind of like the egg peel finish that you want to wet sand when you're done. You're better off staining your would the color you want, then finishing it by using a pneumatic paint gun and automotive grade paints, for the black perimeter and the clear coat.
