Ricky Gervais roasted Hollywood at the Golden Globes five times - 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020. This is the escalation, in order, with the context the room already knew.
He hosted the Golden Globes five times across eleven years, and every year the jokes at Hollywood, the HFPA and the people in the room got harder. We walk through all five, in order, with the background each joke assumed you already had.

2010 - NBC broadcast the 67th Golden Globes, 17 Jan 2010 (NBC / goldenglobes.com). NBC announced
the late-night change on 10 Jan 2010; O'Brien's "People of Earth" statement 12 Jan; exit settlement
21 Jan - NYT "NBC Confirms Leno Will Return to 11:35"; AP/Reuters; NYT "Conan O'Brien to Leave NBC".
Gervais hosted 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2020 - a record fifth in 2020 (Gulf News; goldenglobes.com).
2011 - HFPA had approximately 90 voting members (HFPA; Newsweek). "The Tourist" took three 2011
nominations despite poor reviews (HFPA nominations list; contemporaneous press). HFPA members were
flown to a Cher concert in Las Vegas on a trip tied to promotion of "Burlesque" (LA Times, Reuters,
AP, Nov 2010 - Jan 2011). Broader payola allegations came in a 2011 suit by former HFPA publicist
Michael Russell (Reuters/THR) - we do not assert they were proven. HFPA president Philip Berk called
the performance unacceptable and Gervais was widely reported as finished (AP/BBC/CBC, 2011).
2012 - He hosted the 69th ceremony, 15 Jan 2012 (HFPA; AP/BBC). NBC placed fourth of four US
broadcast networks in the 2011-12 season (Nielsen season averages via Deadline/THR). The HFPA is a
registered non-profit (HFPA filings). The "just like NBC" line is Gervais's joke, not our claim.
2016 - HFPA approximately 90 voters; Lorenzo Soria president (HFPA; Newsweek). Fourth time hosting
after the 2011 backlash (CBC, 2015). 7 Feb 2015 Malibu crash: Kim Howe was killed; investigators
supported a vehicular-manslaughter charge; the DA declined in Sept 2015 (Variety; CBC News; NBC
News). A civil settlement followed (ABC News). GLAAD criticised the joke; Jenner replied; no
apology was made (NME; Variety; ABC News).
2020 - The 77th ceremony, 5 Jan 2020, his fifth and a record (Gulf News; goldenglobes.com). He said
before and after that it was his last (AP/BBC). Kevin Hart stepped down as 2019 Oscars host over
resurfaced tweets, Dec 2018 (AP) - "fired" is Gervais's word, inside the footage. NBC broadcast
2020 as it did 2010 (NBC press materials). "The Morning Show" is an Apple TV+ production (Apple);
the sweatshop line is Gervais's characterisation and is left unrepeated by the narration.
