Guest: Roger Köppel
Roger Köppel is Swiss, admires Germany — and is deeply concerned.
We are in “the most dangerous historical situation since the end of the Second World War.” And the owner of Weltwoche does not see the reason for this in what he considers supposedly aggressive behavior by Russia, but rather in what he describes as the West’s increasingly arrogant attitude.
“And, terribly, Germany is once again playing a very decisive role in all of this.”
A country that Germans once had every reason to be proud of. A “great country that has endured every imaginable abyss and every soaring high.”
And the former editor-in-chief of the German newspaper Die Welt is not saying this from afar. He knows Germany well, including from inside one of the country’s most important publishing houses. He has also accompanied Viktor Orbán to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv and visited Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
When you listen to the former member of the Swiss National Council speak, it is difficult not to be captivated. He talks about his admiration for Germany, a country that “practically survived its own downfall”; his frustration because it “distresses” him to see “what is happening there now”; and his warning that Germany risks escalating a conflict that, in his view, does not have to exist in this form.
I learned a great deal about democracy from a Swiss man: why Germany is held in such high regard abroad, why we may currently be in the process of jeopardizing that reputation, and how close we might actually be to a Third World War.
Are we really “so blinded by our own sense of goodness that we don’t even realize we are about to repeat the mistakes of the past,” as Roger Köppel puts it?
