Speaking as a park ranger on the mall, great video! The story behind the construction of the Washington Monument is a long and crazy tale - definitely encourage reading up on that. So much more to it than just the civil war.

Despite all of its problems and contraditions, I love DC! You didn't mention Andrew Jackson Downing's designs for the Mall, but if completed the Mall would have been a series of Romantic parks, like Central Park in NYC. The McMillan Plan really restored and expanded L'Enfant's vision for the city. I think he would have been pleased. L'Enfant's plan also was a major inspiration for later capital cities, like Canberra and New Delhi.

It's worth mentioning that L'Enfant's father worked on the gardens at Versailles, and the plan of DC, with its diagonal axes and monumental vistas, probably drew inspiration from Versailles' garden more than from Paris. The great boulevards of Paris in their current form didn't exist when DC was designed. It was still mainly a medieval city with later enclaves scattered about. The changes that created the current Paris began under Napoleon and didn't take their current form until his nephew, Napoleon III, was in charge.

L'Enfant designed Washington in 1791, Paris "as we know it" was designed in the 1850's by Haussmann. In short, DC may have influenced Haussmann's Paris.

14:32 1600 Pennsylvania Ave SE is an Apartment building, the McDonald's is right across the street at 1539 Pennsylvania Ave SE. This does mean that if you live in that building you can claim to live in "1600 Pennsylvania Ave."

What great timing I'm just in DC right now on a family vacation

It may not seem important to know this "minutia" but this is a really necessary part of history: not just the where and what, but the WHY and HOW. The lack of this being common knowledge anymore is why we are so lost. Democracies require the people to KNOW STUFF. Thank you for putting it into this format.

Just took my family to DC over the long weekend from NYC, and I was thinking whether Daniel Steiner has a video about DC, to my disappointment, there wasn't.  And it came out exactly on the day we returned!  😀

The physical fracture of DC to its current shape makes so much more sense now. Putting together my map, I was so confused by there were hard angles on three sides, and then the river boundary.

im 67-born & raised in dc, very nicely done.... to do justice, you could pick a subject, do a segment a week and still not finish in 52. you cold spend a month just on Georgtown, the C&O, Chain Bridge and Fletchers. or Wisconsin and how the 2nd largest spot became an Embassy,... or you cold spend another month on Capital Hill who many people have no idea is bigger underground than topside 🙂Very nicely done young man, keep it up.  Nick -- walk'n tour w/a fishn rod!
