Over four decades, Spain has turned into one of Europe’s largest economies, received €268 billion in net funding from the EU budget, built modern infrastructure, and gained access to the vast European market.
But today Spain’s economic miracle faces another problem: the country is taking on more and more social obligations, while productivity and incomes remain lower than in the richest countries of Western Europe.
In this video, we break down how Spain went from economic isolation to an economy of nearly $2 trillion, how the EU helped it become richer, and why the country now risks consuming its success.
We’ll talk about Spain’s housing bubble and the 2008 crisis, rental market regulation, the “curse of the 50th employee,” problems with scaling businesses, and the pension trap. In 2025, Spain spent 13.7% of GDP on pensions, and the pension system ended the year with a €7.4 billion deficit.
Is Spain living beyond its means, or is this simply the price of a generous welfare state? Why does one of the EU’s largest economies still lag behind the richest countries in Europe? And is the welfare state starting to eat away at the economic miracle that the European Union once helped create?
