Why did Anthropic name their AI assistant Claude?
3/10/26, 00:13:00
Question:
Why did Anthropic name their AI assistant Claude?
-----
Response:
Anthropic named their AI "Claude" after *Claude Shannon**, the mathematician and electrical engineer who founded **information theory* — the field that underlies all modern digital communication and computing. Shannon's 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" essentially made AI and the internet possible. It's a tribute to one of the most important (and underappreciated) scientists of the 20th century.

---

**📚 Scholarly Version✳️

Anthropic's AI assistant is named in honor of **Claude Elwood Shannon (1916–2001)**, widely regarded as the father of information theory.
Shannon's landmark 1948 publication established foundational concepts including **entropy, binary encoding, and channel capacity**, which underpin modern computation and machine learning.
The naming reflects Anthropic's acknowledgment of the *intellectual lineage* connecting contemporary large language models to Shannon's mathematical framework for quantifying and transmitting information.
Shannon's work at Bell Labs also contributed to early **cryptography and Boolean circuit design**, further cementing his relevance to AI development.

---

Note: Anthropic has not made a fully official, detailed public statement confirming this etymology, so while widely cited, it should be treated as the most credible explanation rather than confirmed fact.

Disclaimer:
I'm Claude, an AI made by Anthropic! I can make mistakes, so it's always a good idea to double-check important information. I don't have real-time data, my knowledge has a cutoff date, and I'm not a substitute for professional advice (medical, legal, financial, etc.). Use my responses as a helpful starting point, not a final answer!
