Remember watching this race as a schoolkid on TV - I was a massive fan of the sport in the 80's - Murray and James together was a great partnership - it was never quite the same for me again after he died in 1993 - God rest them both
In that season, Senna had 2 electrical issues, 1 brake failure, 1 fuel shortage, and 3 engine failures. In 4 of those races he was leading with a comfotable gap, in one he was fighting for the lead, and in another he was in second place. Without those mechanical problems, Senna would have scored anywhere from 30 to over 40 additional points. Instead of finishing fourth that season, the Brazilian would have finished at least second, battling Prost for points until the end of the season. Even tho his car was definitely not the best one and let's not forget it was his second season so far.
Thank you for sharing on YouTube. I remember all of these races up to 1998. I can’t get into F1 these days.
On a side note and with respect to all who have commented don’t forget about Manfred Winklehock and Stefan Bellof who are both in this race and lost their lives on the track. I know for certain that Winklehock’s fatal crash was in Canada…not sure if it was a sports car race or ?
I recently watched a French interview with Prost and finally he spoke truths and showed some respect and humanity. I detested Prost as a driver: it was never his fault ever! It was the weather, the tires, McLaren was giving Senna superior equipment, and all of his bs. He finally said in that French interview that when he raced he gave 70% of his being on the track and not willing to risk more because the remainder was reserved for his family and other interests in his life. And, he said that Senna risked 100%: he was willing and accepted whatever happened.
In my opinion Prost would show a lot of humility and humanity conceding the 1989 driver’s championship to Senna because he did not earn it. Prost and Ballestre robbed Senna of the win and the driver’s championship in Japan that year.
Look at this race how much trouble Prost had getting by De Cesaris….similar to the trouble he had getting past Zanardi at Donnington in 1993. Even in that race if Prost had been humble he wouldn’t have made his Williams extra wide with Damon behind him. If he had let Damon by and as James Hunt stated that Damon was faster than Prost and the Williams is as much a better car in the wet as it is in the dry. Damon would’ve given Senna a better challenge and if he got past him, it would have given Prost a chance at the win because Damon would’ve been forced to let Prost pass as stated in his contract.
As much as I detested Prost I don’t respect Michael’s titles. He blatantly cheated deliberately running into Damon and then the games Ferrari, Michael and Eddie Irvine played on Jacques.
PS: As many people do post on YouTube Senna and Prost DIDN’T have a friendship in the last year of Senna’s life. When the onboard camera of his pole at Imola and Senna said in the radio to his ‘friend Prost’: I’m a native Portuguese speaker…when Senna said it, it was sarcastic. People who are native Portuguese speakers and familiar with the culture will also understand what I have written
some were selected to live their lives to the end like lauda, prost, piquet, while others ran out of luck, and lost their lives too early. rip elio de angelis, alboreto and Senna.
Excellent coverage; Murray and James will never be topped, IMO. I must say, however, the straight-ahead camera perspective, especially on Hangar Straight, really reduces how fast the cars are going. Check out the 1969 British GP on a 23-minute ESPN Motor Sport post, where the camera is on a boom lift at Chapel, and you see the racers tear away down Hangar. The straight-on view is good re seeing the cars' positioning on the track, but a views either fixed, or zoomed from behind on a couple of fast sections would be a great improvement, IMO. (First-world complaint, for sure....😶)
