I'm 54 and I got out in 2013. I have the reoccurring dream that the army is calling me back

22 years USMC, one of the worst days is standing in formation watching a turd get promoted or receive a medal.

Doing dumb stuff with the boys will always be something I miss from my time. Lots of dirtbags but most of the guys you meet are legit. Then you have your close friends. Best guys ever.

USAF vet, 1st Gulf War. I lost a good friend to a ‘friendly fire’ accident in 2/1991 in Kuwait (Mark). That was a horrible day for all of us. And seeing his locker when we returned to Georgia was another kick in the gut. He had a wife and young child.

A flight line job in the AF is not typically a ‘dangerous role’, even in wartime. I was a weapons loader on an F16, and we were well-trained on aircraft safety. Unlike the Army or Marines that kick down doors, or engage in live fire fights, we rarely lose members on a flight line, staged away from danger. But, this is the possibility that we all signed-up for. We are all PROUD OF AIC MARK TUCKER. And I’ve never forgotten his sacrifice.

Your last day ever. That shit sucked. I was happy and looking forward to it. But getting that last signature and driving away from base , leaving everything and everyone behind knowing you are no longer part of the Navy had me tearing up.  It was a long 6 hours drive back home

I retired from the Navy 23 years ago, and you are correct when you said " I miss the clowns, Not the circus".  There is not a day that goes by that I don't reminisce about what I did. I miss it, the people,  the submarines. Thank you for sharing this.

Retired 2010.  I miss the camaraderie, but not the headaches.

100% true on the missing the military. I've missed parts of it 20+ years.

I know a lot of ex military personnel who all say the same thing " If they contacted me or I was able to, I would rejoin in a heartbeat" Thank You To All Those Vets That Fought For The Freedoms I Treasure So Much, All Gave Some And Some Gave All. You signed the blank check to Uncle Sam and sadly he cashed a lot of them. Siempre Fidelis, No Man Left Behind.

I would go back to when I was an E4 in a heartbeat.

I can well understand #5.  I don't miss the Marine Corps but there ARE times I sure miss being with Marines.

I love how emotional you got about missing it—that’s how you know you had the career that you loved, even on the bad days. If only everyone was that fortunate. Its truly a blessing to have job that you love.

I definitely understand the last one—missing the time you had while in service. That's why, 10 years after I got out, I am going back in, into a different MOS than I had the first time. Especially since I am older than when I first enlisted, I am going to experience what differences there have been since the time I left until now.

To me, David the last one is kind of bitter-sweet. I got out of the Corps in 2002 and each time my heart aches because I miss the guys it also reminds me of how much I love them. I would truly give anything for one more day in the motor pool

lol Basic at Fort Leanoard Wood, our bus got lost on the way to reception. So even more tense when we finally got off the bus.

Many of the guys I served with in the Marine Corps stay in touch to this day. Forty plus years ago. My buddy Wayne said just a couple weeks ago "we didn't know the worst of times was actually the best of times"
