Al Murray studied history at Oxford University, and has an MA in modern history.

American English is a strange language. When a USian says that "they went to the middle east to find weapons of mass destruction" what that means in regular English is "we went to the middle east to steal oil". It can cause a bit of confusion.

He's very knowledgeable about history because he has a degree in Modern History from Oxford. And he's drinking because this character is the pub landlord.

"it been a while we won a war, not since the war of independence" And even that you did not win by yourself, France helped

The United States missed half The Great War (later called WW1) & the first 3 years of the 2nd one.  The day the Crown declared war my homeland of Canada did ... both times.

The British comedy philosophy: It's healthy to make fun of yourselves from time to time. It keeps the humour balanced.

I'm sure if you watch the video in its entirely, the reason it focuses on those lads in the front row & how he got onto this topic is because earlier while doing crowd work he asked those lads what they did for a living and they said Soldiers
And the lad with glasses on the left was called Ludwig so there's your German point of interest.

That was very funny. I haven't watched him for a while. He is a very educated man having graduated from Oxford University . Glad you enjoyed it too.😊

There's no one like Al Murray in America because you have not won a world war.

The American revolution is basically a British civil war, where the insurrectionists had the help of the French and the Spanish. You were not even the USA then.

The British have a go at everything that is ours, so don’t get offended when we get at the US too.  With British comedians, everything is fair game.

Al Murray is incredibly intelligent. Also worth wa\tching some of his serious videos with James Holland that dive deeper into WWII including the German plans for invading Britain and many other aspects of the war.

Al Murray acting as "The Pub Landlord". Hence, the bar & beer. From Yorkshire

Al Murray is so quick to reply to this stuff, the one where he asks the audience to name a country and he will tell them how the British defeated them.

He is a history graduate from Oxford.

You have to understand that he is playing a character. The pub landlord.

for murica, the goal isn't to win wars, but to wage them.

The key phrase is "won on their own".

Really glad you looked at this one…a few years ago I met a bloke who was having a nice day out…we had a nice chat, and I really liked meeting him. Seconds after we separated my friends came up to me and said “you know that was Al Murray, as in The Pub Landlord”… honestly glad I had no clue at the time what that meant, cos I might’ve clammed up rather than held a normal conversation

Behind the humour, Al Murray is  very knowledgeable historian, as well as a comedian.

War independence Was Helped by the French, Spanish and Dutch.
America didn't win that on their own.
