Rocks deep within the mantle, 660 km below Earth's surface and invisible to us, actually contain water.

However, this water does not remain stagnant like an underground ocean; instead, it exists trapped within the crystal structures of minerals such as ringwoodite.

In this Earth Documentary Hall, we explore the potential amount of water hidden deep within the Earth, starting with ringwoodite discovered in a single small diamond in Brazil. Research suggests that if water is widely distributed across the entire mantle transition zone, the volume could rival or, in some cases, even exceed that of surface oceans. However, the exact total amount is still under investigation.

The region between approximately 410 and 660 km inside the Earth is known as the "mantle transition zone." Wazzlyite and ringwoodite in this area can store significantly more water than other mantle minerals. Furthermore, at the 660 km boundary, the mineral structure changes again, causing water to escape and potentially affecting the melting points of surrounding rocks and the movement of the mantle.

Where did this deep water come from? Some of this water may have remained within the Earth since its formation, while others may be the result of oceanic plates subducting into the Earth's interior, transporting seawater to depths of hundreds of kilometers. This massive circulation between the surface and the Earth's interior is called the "deep water cycle."

The oceans we see may not represent the entirety of Earth's water.

Water exists within rocks hundreds of kilometers beneath our feet, and this water is likely connected to plate movements, volcanic activity, and the massive circulation within the Earth's interior.

In this video, we examine:

evidence of water existing 660 km below Earth's surface;

the discovery of ringwoodite and ultra-deep diamonds;

the principles by which mantle transition zones store water;

the process of seawater descending into the Earth's interior; and
how water deep within the Earth connects to the oceans on the surface.
