I have The Friends of Eddie Coyle on DVD from The Criterian Collection, Two-Lane Blacktop I bought with a souvenir tin with a replica of a movie poster, car key chain, guide book, and DVD 📀. I also have They Shoot Horses, Don't They? on DVD. ABC films also produced the ABC Movie Of The Week which debuted in the fall of 1969.

These are monumental films in their own ways, with enormous performances. People need to open their minds, let movies inform as well invite escape.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle was the first R Rated movie I saw. My best friend’s sister took us to see it and at 11 years old, we couldn’t wait to tell everyone at school that we’d seen an “R” movie over the weekend. Great memories.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle was authentic partly because it included near suburban locations like the Red Line station in Quincy, the train station in Sharon, the bank in Dedham, Memorial Drive in front of MIT(my alma mater). When I was a student, I went and watched the Bruins from the balcony just like Eddie did, drinking low end beer. In recent Boston movies, seemingly everyone lives and seemingly everything takes place under the Tobin Bridge. Eddie Coyle lived in Quincy.

Eddie Coyle released the same day as Live and Let Die. It never stood a chance. The numbers were $344,776 to... uh... $161,800,000

Confusing how the clips are interspersed from different movies and don’t track with the dialogue

Sorcerer 1977 and Electra Glide In Blue 1973 are the two movies I’m so happy i found as an adult. I wouldn’t have appreciated either as a teenager or even in my twenties and maybe even thirties. I’m 56 and watched both in my late forties. Both are a masterclass in film making and should be seen by everyone who’s ever had a love affair with cinema.

What a great list. How far Hollywood has fallen since the 1970’s. No one really takes artistic risks like these anymore.

The Friends Of Eddie Cole is not forgotten here}In my Library +I'm from Massachusetts:)

An excellent list of 70’s, the last golden age of cinema, pictures that have matured like a fine wine. This cineast’s favorite is “Straight Time”. Hoffman is spectacular and men will fall for a young Theresa Russell. Still haven’t forgiven Altman for changing Chandler’s ending in “The Long Goodbye” while the casting of the female lead is surprisingly bad. In “The Last Detail” Towne nailed the dialogue which was always his strongest suit. It feels as though the masses still don’t gravitate to “Fat City” and they’re missing one helluva film. A wonderful presentation of these must see movies by our host.

I love Mitchum's opening monologue about his knuckles.  It hooked me right in

Straight time is great. Like a forestudy to Heat. And Hoffman pulls Walsh' pants down on the highway😂

Ive seen all these films, I grew up during the 70s back when movies were movies and late night television was good entertainment. Thanks for sharing.

"Straight Time" is one of the finest movies I have in my personal collection of DVDs.  Harry Dean Stanton is wonderful as a professional thief.  He is shot and killed after a jewelry store robbery goes wrong.  As he dies, the position of his fallen body and the look on his face remind me of the dying of Robert Kennedy Sr..  Brilliant insight.  I can't say enought about the beautiful Teresa Russell.  This movie is worth the watch.

It would be nice if the pictures being shown actually matched the movie being discussed.

«The Friends Of Eddie Cole», «The Conversation»  and «The Long Goodbye» are the only three I saw in this selection. I have to say the three flicks didn’t worked for me. I thought a lot of these films were searching themselves in a changing era. In 1976 Spielberg would come up with the «blockbuster» genre that would push aside all independent productions. Still, thanks for that selection, looking forward to see a few!

........you had me at "Eddie Coyle"......green screen I think was the final nail in the coffin for film.....although many nails preceded that......no longer even using film as a medium........release considerations based on share holder value......leading to sequel-itis......etc.....etc........

I don't remember Straight Time in 1978, I turned 21 that year and saw several movies. I came across Straight Time about 10 years ago, completely unfamiliar with it. It is a MASTERPIECE in my opinion. Did you see the future CA governor in The Long Goodbye?

Just watched Eddie Coyle on youtube a few weeks ago.  Its a great movie that doesnt underestimate the viewer.  Stays with you after the fact.   Can see the influence on Michael Mann.

Ours was a TV (and for me at least,) and movie generation. I was born in 1958 and watched television when I wasn't outside with neighborhood kids, or playing sports. Book reading and music was another frequent activity indoors.. But, even as a young boy, Dr. Strange love, or WC Fields, or Butch Cassidy, or the wild bunch, or easy rider, etc etc etc., were great experiences. At age 67, such memories are a wonderful thing to possess. I don't live in the past, but I certainly appreciate it.
