Now, this is the final remake of these comparison videos. Hope you understand ;)

Some are better, some aren't. Such is the fate of an art rework.

I can appreciate the work that went into it… but the vision is completely lost lol

Something that's missing from most of the newer sprites is the gradient lighting. That little bit of white on the models helped make them pop. They tried to use gradient by using different hues of color, but it just doesn't pop the same.

The Crow's aura... its gone

You can definitely tell which ones where designed to be displayed on CRT’s and which ones weren’t-

There’s a bit of aura lost.

Old one ominous vibe is better

But some of the new one isn't bad either, in my opinion

I’m not going to lie, I kind of like the old ones better

That's amazing how they managed to ruin the original artstyle so thoroughly

Wally doesn't even look like a human anymore in his 25th anniversary sprite.

you can notice the original's accommodation for CRT 4:3 displays as opposed to flatscreen TVs and monitors that display raw 1:1 pixels

The lamp had TEETH?!

Man, they would have kept Teddys knife!!!

Most of these are missing the texture and expression present in the OG sprites. I’d honestly focus on reworking the overworld sprites rather than the combat ones because the combat sprites are already mostly fine

That's why I love EarthBound fans. If it were any other ROM hack with revamped sprites, people would immediately consider it an improvement, because new = better

But no, with EarthBound people actually care about the art style and what the devs were going for, which is really rare to see with NES and Game Boy games

The new sprites are good in their own right, mostly, and the attempt at visually remastering the game is appreciated, but what was the point of altering them so drastically? It's not like the old ones were terribly far from the models/concept art. Besides, the grungy look they had to them actually made them fit in better with the artstyle Earthbound would later use, and wasn't one of the points of the hack to establish more continuity between the two? Maybe if this was an attempt to unify the game more with Mother 3, which has a considerably cleaner and cuter aesthetic, it'd have been understandable, but id doesn't really work all that well for either of the first two games.

I like some of the old ones and some of the new ones

3:21 That fireball looks like crap. Literally.

This feels like when Minecraft changed textures to the new ones
