We recently covered the Banjo-Kazooie series and the new Mario Kart reveal teaser... so featuring Diddy Kong Racing seemed natural! Here are 13 differences between the original for Nintendo 64 and its NDS port, mostly comparing the initial part of the game.

🏁...And it looks like the Looygi Bros. finish first once again! 🏆Too bad, Kazooie - the developers already had a big red clucking bird as a driver🐓🏎Tell it to to the frogs!🤗

I used to play the DS version's multiplayer with friends all the time.
Since the game had airplanes, and the tracks had no time limit, we would play hide-and-seek tag on all the different levels.

This game is so much better on the N64. The charm, the sounds, the graphics, all of it way better in the original.

I tested this at NOA. TWICE. The original DS boss battles required you to draw walls for the racer to bump and slide against in order to drive while fighting the bosses. We hated it so much that we got Nintendo's attention, which is hard to do as testers. They then made this an option instead of mandatory.

Here’s other differences I noticed when I played.
1. In the N64 version you could do barrel rolls and loops in the plane. That feature was removed in the DS version.
2. If you went to a door without the right amount of balloons or went to a boss door without finishing the races a denied tune would play in the N64 version. In the DS version it no longer does that.
3. In the first race against Smokey he would spew fireballs and in the second race do it more rapidly. In the DS version his first race is much easier since he doesn’t spew any fireballs at all. Only in the second race.
4. In N64 you could collect bananas to increase your top speed. The DS replaced it with coins that doesn’t seem to increase your speed.
5. Tricky’s track has a shortcut in the N64 version. It’s no longer there in the DS version although his track is shorter and harder to fall off. Also the second race has no falling trees in the DS.
6. Everfrost Peak can be raced in cars in the N64. It’s not possible in the DS due to the ice being changed to water
7. Blubber only shoots bubbles in the second race in the N64. In the DS he shoots bubbles and spike bombs in the second race.
8. The red balloon in the original gave you a missile, homing missile, and then 10 missiles. On the DS it gives you a missile, 5 semi homing missiles and then one homing missile.
9. After defeating a boss you had to do the silver coin challenge on the N64. That was replaced with a touch screen balloon pop challenge in the DS.
10. Bluey in both races gives you a head start in the DS version.
11. Krunch no longer has the skull on his jacket in the DS version

If Banjo and Kazooie are in the new Mario Kart, I could totally see Kazooie being Banjo's (exclusive) glider.

I like this channel
Throwing in Banjo and Kazooie with their dialogue from their original series

The n64 version was so magical compared to Mario Kart. I loved both games, but I'll never forget running over the frog with the rooster crown and unlocking Drumstick that first time. Absolutely Wonderful Game.

Characters also had their own color on the vehicles while on the DS they’re all yellow, with yours being customizable.

1:42 Gotta like how some either forgot or didn't know that "Bad Fur Day" wasn't Conker's first solo game after this but the more kid-friendly Gameboy Color game called "Conker's Pocket Tales" (which also changed when played on the older Gameboy)
There were plans to keep him kid-friendly but things happened and the game they were working on next for him "Twelve Tales: Conker 64" was canceled and they then moved on to a more mature game instead. (His girlfriend Berri also changed. Brown fur to grey)

That last part banjo says
Why must you hurt me like that? Now, I must live with the hope of Banjo and Kazooie in Mario Kart.

Driving around and finding the balloons and secrets in the hub world was my top 5 comfy gaming moments as a kid.

The funny thing is Kazooie technically IS in Diddy Kong Racing, but you only hear her sometimes if you ram into a wall.

This is how I learn this game had a DS port? I would've killed for this if I had known

Hearing the Diddy Kong Racing 64 soundtrack always makes me unreasonably happy 😂 Such fond memories playing that game! ❤

Also worth mentioning that Banjo and Kazooie (as one playable character) were in Sega and Sonic All-Stars Racing on the Xbox 360.

Worth noting - Bad Fur Day was not Conker's first solo outing! He had a gameboy game called Conker's Pocket Tales, which maintained his more innocent depiction from here in Diddy Kong Racing before taking a turn for the mature with the release of Bad Fur Day.
