The spectacle is intentionally meant to evoke a bygone era: Every year, the German Burschenschaft (student fraternity) meets near Eisenach and marches in a torchlight procession to a monument. The ideology of these men is, at the very least, decidedly reactionary. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Germany's domestic intelligence agency) monitors parts of the organization, and fraternity members repeatedly attract attention for their racist and antisemitic views. SPIEGEL TV took a closer look at the spectacle.
âș A SPIEGEL TV report by Caroline Niebisch and Adrian Altmayer
Editor's note/correction:
The initial version of this report stated that Mr. Kevin Dorow of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) had been barred from holding public office for two years because of the phrase "Youth must be led by youth." This is incorrect. In fact, only the federal executive committee has so far filed a corresponding motion with the AfD's Schleswig-Holstein state arbitration court. Mr. Dorow argues against the motion, among other things, that the statement did not originate with the Hitler Youth (HJ) but is much older. The outcome of the proceedings is uncertain.
